Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects joined with South Seattle Community College to provide design leadership in the redevelopment of the Duwamish Center into the new SSCC Georgetown Campus.
Two new buildings have been designed to respect and respond to the industrial neighborhood context. They adopt the scale, materials and form of their industrial neighbors yet the design combines these in a creative way to give the buildings their own unique identity. Simple and inexpensive, yet durable and sustainable materials form the core of the building structure and systems.
The Gene J. Colin Education Building is a 13,000-sf two-story building which serves as the primary instruction and administration building on the redeveloped campus. Constructed by M. J. Takisaki, it features a light-filled lobby with two adjacent classrooms which can be joined forming a large assembly space that accommodates ninety-six occupants. Administrative offices are located off the lobby while the upper floor provides three classroom and additional administrative spaces.
Directly adjacent is the 19,500-sf Trowel Trades Building, a single-story tilt-up concrete and metal framed structure constructed by Pellco Construction. It provides two large vocational shops, two classrooms, together with offices and student support spaces serving the concrete and brick masons apprenticeship programs.
